Method

Glass bead blasting is a method whereby the blasting medium is applied to surfaces under pressure inside specially equipped cabinets fitted with the appropriate technology. It is used on stainless steel components, non-ferrous metals and other work pieces, e.g. in order to remove foreign substances by abrasion and to give the work piece a uniform and attractive appearance suitable for subsequent manufacturing steps.

The resulting surfaces are more matted than roughened, the latter being the case when blasting with corundum.

Material

The blasting beads are usually produced by melting down broken soda glass and mainly consist of silicon oxide, sodium oxide and calcium oxide. Foreign contaminants are limited to at most 0.1% by weight.

Standards

Glass bead blasting is standardised in DIN 8200 and defined as a solid synthetic mineral blasting medium in accordance with DIN 8201 part 7. HN STRAHLTECH uses grain sizes 70 - 110 and 150 - 250 µm. Other grain sizes available on request.
